A Comparative Narratological Study of the Representation of Women as Mythological Archetypes in Iranian New Wave Cinema and 1960s–1970s Fiction

Adopting a comparative approach, this research conducts a narratological analysis of the representation of women in Iranian New Wave cinema and Iranian fiction of the1960s and 1970s )1340s–1350s in the Iranian calendar(. The primary objective is to examine how female characters are transformed into mythological archetypes and to analyse the commonalities and differences of these representations across two distinct media. The research methodology is descriptive-analytical, grounded in the theories of feminis t myth criticism )Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva and ‘comparative narratology’
Gérard Genette. the corpus of the study encompasses seminal New Wave films, such as The Cow
Dariush Mehrjui, 1969( and Qeysar )Masoud Kimiai, 1969, alongside novels including Suvashun( Savushun) Simin Daneshvar, 1969( and The Cannon)Gholamhossein Sa’edi, 1969(. The findings indicate that both media utilise mythic
archetypes )including the ‘mother-victim’, ‘female-saviour’, and ‘temptress’(, yet they reinterpret these archetypes within disparate social and artistic contexts. Whereas New Wave cinema, despite its formal innovations, predominantly relies on traditional representations and reductive female stereotypes, the fiction of the 1960s and 1970s offered greater scope for the creation of active and multifaceted female characters. These results suggest that the representation of women during this period was not merely a reproduction of classical myths, but rather a response to the socio-cultural
discourse of the era.
