The Architectural Mechanism of the "Dardasht Neighborhood" in Isfahan: From Semantic Disruption to Semantic Connection

Abstract:   (15 Views)
This article, guided by a semiotic methodology, presents an interpretation of Isfahan's "Dardasht neighborhood." We believe that many places and architectural elements within this neighborhood possess an identity rooted in significant meaning.  The "Dardasht neighborhood" is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Isfahan and Iran. Conversely, some of these places confront a form of semantic absence and emptiness. In such a scenario, one might assert that the materialization of these buildings and their architectural language is entirely devoid of original or indigenous thought, being merely an imitation of a foreign culture. Consequently, they are fundamentally rootless within the cultural matrix of this land.
These structures are often placed alongside other buildings with an identity unrelated to their original architectural identity, making it impossible to define them beyond their utilitarian function. The semantic syntax and incongruous arrangements of their buildings and architecture in certain parts of this neighborhood produce meanings that confront the residents of "Dardasht neighborhood" with difficulties when interpreting their own neighborhood (the neighborhood as a text). In a sense, a "semantic disruption" is created, which prevents a proper reading of the neighborhood. The question arises: How did this semantic disruption occur? Subsequently, three strategies are presented in the conclusion section to help revive its identity with the assistance of the neighborhood's residents.
