Abstract: (186 Views) |
Reflecting on the ideas of ‘the alternative’, the present paper looks at the two sides of the alternative in retail spaces, namely alternative design practices which question and distance themselves from the ways in which mainstream commercial spaces are designed on one hand, and social productions of space which challenge mainstream shopping practices and their associated lifestyles on the other. This comparison is done through scrutinizing one example of each type in two very different contexts, namely, the UK and Iran, and shows that despite deep contextual differences, there are strong associations between alternative spaces of consumption on one hand, and spaces of alternative consumption on the other, among the two contexts.
