| This study investigates the narrative and ideological mechanisms of the Taʿziyeh manuscript of Imam Husayn’s martyrdom from the Chodźko collection, dating to the Qajar period. The central question asks how narratological components are represented in this version and how they relate to the reproduction of dominant courtly discourse. To address this, a descriptive–analytical method is employed within Gérard Genette’s narratological framework, analysing the five components of order, duration, frequency, mood, and voice. The findings indicate that the manuscript deploys techniques such as retrospective anachronism (analepsis), compression of battle scenes, elongation of farewell sequences, ritualised repetition of key motifs (such as thirst and intercession), and a pronounced sonic opposition between the awliyāʾ (the righteous) and the ashqiyāʾ (the wicked). Collectively, these strategies produce a deterministic, resignation-oriented narrative that underscores the inevitability of the Karbala tragedy. At the level of narrative motivation, these mechanisms are mobilised not merely for historical or ritual representation, but to legitimise the Qajar socio-political order. The study concludes that the Chodźko version reconstitutes the event of Ashura within the conservative values governing the Qajar lifeworld and, through the ritual capacities of Taʿziyeh, situates the spectator within an ideology of submission and intercession. |
