Historic urban fabrics are considered the most valuable assets of cities. Over a relatively long period, they have resonated with the vicissitudes of human life and stand as custodians of tangible and intangible material and spiritual values. The passage of time naturally subjects them to decay, much like any living organism. However, similar to experienced elders, historic fabrics—though outwardly worn—are repositories of valuable experiences. Therefore, they must be observed and listened to with precision, and their achievements must be deeply scrutinized for the sake of implementation and continuity.
This research offers a critical phenomenological interpretation of historic urban fabric revitalization. To this end, employing a meta-study method and a systematic review of existing literature, concepts such as the meaning of dwelling, phenomenological insight, and ontological insecurity have been examined. The study's findings underscore the imperative to move beyond the conventional top-down or instrumental perspective, advocating instead for the employment of contemplative thinking to fully apprehend the ontological essence of historic urban fabrics. Consequently, this approach facilitates the provision of realistic and empathetic plans and schemes for the regeneration of historic urban fabrics.
